l00t!

Picked up some bits of literary goodness that I've been awaiting for months (the Stross one, anyway). So that's my weekend filled... :-)

Cleaning pt. IV: The Thaw

Cleaning the fridge today.
One of those chores I keep putting off and off and off...

Sunset

Another sunset. This time what I find cool (apart from the clouds) is that you can just see where the sun actually went.

Yellow

Yet again... some tree that I don't know the name of, in full bloom.
Sorry if it's getting repetitive.

Promises, Promises...

The weather prophets have been forecasting more nice summery weather, not necessarily hot and sunny all the time, but definitely dry. They have in fact been calling this the dryest May in fifty years or so. So here's what it was like this morning (and still is now, mid-afternoon):
Naturally.
Oh well, at least the farmers will be pleased.

On a related note: On special days (royal anniversaries, state visits and such) the buses will drive around with little flags on top, like this:
Today's occasion is the Crown Prince's 40th birthday. And judging by the weather somebody's been a bad boy... ;-)

Strange Fruit pt. II: Suckers

Out on a Sunday walk, what do I see? A pacifier tree!

That Ol' Chestnut

Royal wedding today.
So as a measure of how much that means to me personally I'm giving you this picture of a young but ambitious horse chestnut tree.

Setting Sail

A couple of reconstruction Viking boats out on the fjord. A fairly common sight in the summer, at least hereabouts.

A Short, Sharp Shower of...

Laundry today. Hung it outside, seeing that no rain was forecast. Then when I went to fetch it back in I found that some unspecified avian had decided to 'gift' me with a little air-mail delivery.
Aaaargh!

Again and again and...

Lilacs yet again. This time it's the snow-white kind.
Okay, that's enough with the lilacs already. No more. Promise.

Slugfest

Another spot of wet from above has really brought out the snails.
PS: Sorry if critters like that creep you out. Me, they don't bother. When I was eight or so I even collected snails in an old apple crate, covering it with potato sacking to keep them in. I was a weird kid... ;-)

Wall of Ivy

Rain earlier today. The droplets make the new-born leaves look all fresh and sparkly.

Running Late?

Nice 'little' sundial. Except... I took this picture at almost exactly 6 PM. Now, even allowing for summertime this means either whoever set up the sundial did a shoddy job of it, or the Sun needs a new alarm clock :-)

Shapes

Sculpture by the local high school. For some reason I see it as a woman. Albeit a rather oddly-shaped woman...

Standout

I don't know what this tree thinks it's doing, wearing the wrong colour for the season! But I intend to find out.

More Lilac

I've never realised before that lilac comes in several different colours. That'll teach me :-)

Duck!

In one of Roskilde's two squares stands a sculpture part of which is this broad and very shallow basin. This morning I came past and spotted this mallard standing in it (barely got his feet wet), and I just had to snap him!
PS: The green is in fact the beeches standing just inside the wall of the neighbouring cemetery. I think the reflection makes the whole picture wonderfully absurd.

Another Mystery

Dunno what this is... I pass it down the street. Vanilla and pale pink, the colours always remind me of marshmallows :-)

Lilac

Aren't they pretty?

Sunday, May 11, 2008

Work Out

This is what it looks like when 6000 women gather in central Copenhagen for a 5- or 10-kilometre run (well, walk in my case) sponsored by a leading women's fitness magazine. #1 Chick Friend and myself made a girls' day out of it.
I probably shouldn't tell you this, but after finishing we went to McD's for milkshakes :-P But after slogging through the city at midday with 24 degrees in the shade (that's 75 degrees Fahrenheit) we'd earned them!

Yellow

Nothing special today. Just dandelions.
I think they're pretty. But then, this isn't my lawn.

Re-View

Okay, I showed you this view of the fjord back in February. But it looks much nicer now :-)

New Flatness

My old monitor has been acting up for a couple of months (well, it is nearly eight years old), and a new computer shop just opened in town with some very good special offers, so now I'm the proud owner of a 21-inch widescreen. Compared with my old 17-incher I feel like I'm in a freaking movie theatre now.

Art d'Eau

Another one of Roskilde's many sculptures. This one looks better live because of the water running down it. But here it is anyway, with the morning sun gleaming off it.

Open Air

First day of sandal season. Free those toesy-woesies!

Ball On

Watched the final session of the Snooker World Championship tonight. I happen to like snooker.
Ronnie the Rocket beat Captain Fantastic, predictably.
At the start of the session there was a - get this - streaker! In snooker of all things! And apparently it's not even the first time that's happened in snooker - head on over to YouTube and search the keywords 'snooker' and 'streaking' and you'll see what I mean. Warning: There will be nudity.

Catchup

Saturday: Bad modem. Bad, bad modem.

Sunday:

Not sure what this one was about, really.

Monday:

It's strawberry season! Yum!

Tuesday:

I think these must be a close cousin of this one. There's a family resemblance...

Wednesday:
Probably the only cat I've ever known not to instantly inhale her yeast tablets.

History Lesson 3: Liberation

Back in 1945, the German occupying forces agreed to surrender in Denmark and Norway on May 5th. The announcement was made via radio (from London, I think) on the evening of May 4th, and people immediately tore down their blackout curtains in celebration so that, for the first time in years, light from within was allowed to spill out. It has since become tradition to light candles in the window on May 4th to commemorate the outbreak of peace.

Clock's Fast...

This picture is not a cheat. I took it less than an hour ago. I didn't expect to see dandelion clocks yet.

Stumped

Spotted this lovely tree stump in one of the parks.

Defiant

Okay, this picture is a cheat. I actually took it one year ago, on May 1st, 2007.
The explanation is simple: Here in Denmark the trade unions normally celebrate the International Worker's Day. However, last year the Roskilde chapters announced they would not be carrying the traditional red banners through the town (for whatever reason). So I was kind of pleased to see that someone was determined to fly the flag :-)
