Ducklings, yes. Ugly, no. I find them adorable. And so clearly not scared of people (I was crouching a couple of feet away from them and they totally ignored me). Probably they think humans=breadcrumbs.

Did you know ducks will "duck sit" the babies for each other? So the new moms and dads can get a break. Our friends that live up on the Maine lake told us that.
I did notice that not all the ducklings appeared to be of the same 'race' or whatever it's called (subspecies?), and that only one adult was actually with the group. Sweet :-)
When I farmed some years ago I kept poultry, including ducks. What used to happen was the youngsters got all mixed up. Some of the chicks would be under the mother duck and some of the ducklings would end up under a hen. Luckily as they got older they sorted themselves out so only the ducklings got taken to the pond!!
